don´t worry, we are still alive!

hello!
it appears its been a while since we updated this thing.... sorry guys. but don´t worry we are here now!
since our last post we have done and seen sooo much! after Vietnam we flew to Bali where we stayed for two weeks, and had the chance to meet up with Bridget and Karina which was amazing, and soo much fun!!! before they arrived we went to a city called Ubud which was awesome...its got an artsy vibe to it and all the buildings and streets were so pretty. we loved all the hindu architecture! all the buildings look like little temples it was so cool. we went to a monkey forest there which was quite the experience... both Kaylen and I had monkeys crawling up and down us!! we were really scared at first and apprehensive to enter the forest but we finally came around to them. they are soo devious and cheeky though. you have to hang on to all your stuff or they will steal it! at a temple in south Bali one jumped onto my face and stole my sun glasses! we are very pleased that there are no monkeys in europe...
anyways, when B and K came to visit we met them in Kuta beach then we took a boat to Gili Trawangan (a very small island a couple hrs from bali) and it was sooo beautiful! the water was so warm and the colour was unreal. we will try and post some pics soon! we all went scuba diving there and it was wayyyy better than thailand! i´ve never seen so many turtles and cool fish in my life, it was great! (sadly we saw no sharks like we were hoping... guess i´ll have to go back!)
we left bali the 2nd of May and flew Qatar airways to Madrid! spain has been amazinggg. everything is so beautiful here. we stayed in madrid for 5 days with Kaylens sister who is studying there, did some sightseeing etc. had some great tapas (free!) and saw a bull fight! (don´t need to see another one of those...)
oh wait have to run!! just remembered we need to go meet someone in five minutes.
to be continued...

Saigon and Mui Ne, Vietnam

hello everyone! we are currently soaking up some much needed sun in Mui Ne, which is about 4 hours from Saigon/Ho Chi Minh city. It's gorgeous here.. we are sad to be leaving tomorrow :( we are staying at a hostel called Vietnam-Austria House and its amazing.. the manager is super nice and helps us out a lot and the place is really great.. nice clean rooms, pool out front, and its right on the water! we met Amber and Hannah and have been hanging with them for a few days which has been so much fun. i think it was the 4th time we were able to meet up which was cool. before Mui Ne we took the bus from Phnom Penh to Saigon and stayed there for 3 nihgts. we LOVED the city... so much going on and tons of energy. we visited the war remnants musem (which was like 4 floors and lots of reading!); it went through all the details of the war with the states and had tons of pictures, artifacts, etc. it was really good ,very intense though and sad. we also went to the Cu Chi tunnels which are about 2 hours from the city.. they are an underground tunnel system that took 20 years to build starting during the war with the french, but were only used during the war with the states. they were pretty cool to see. they let us crawl through a few of them too, they were sooo small! they also showed us all the traps they used to use during the war... classic traps like putting grass/leaves over a hole in the ground while the enemy falls through onto spikes.. meanwhile the americans were using tanks and bombs and guns to fight. we also did some non-war things like buying cameras (i bought a normal one and kaylen got a great deal on a video camera which has been so fun to use!) anyways, gotta run for dinner! xoxo nomads

Sihanoukville

Just a quick update to go with the pictures!
We were in Sihanoukville for a week, and after a day there we met some people who worked at this bar called JJs and they told us we could work there. It was awesome, they set us up with accomodation (a dorm room above the bar), free food, and free alcohol. Basically our job was to hand out flyers a couple times a day, then we would bartend from about 930pm to 5am. we werent required to make any of the intricate drinks, most people just order simple mixers or beers (cause theyre so cheap) so they dont really need to train you or anything. It wasnt serious either, if we werent bartending we would just go dance around/chat to people/etc. It was super fun though, were glad we did it. SUch an easy way to save money but also meet so many people.
We are back in Phnom Penh now, going to go to Vietnam shortly.
About the Angkor Wat picture, sorry its pretty crappy. Since Maddy's pictures were all lost and my screen is cracked, my pictures from that day didnt turn out very well and because I cant use any settings on mine the sunrise shots didnt work out very well. SOrrrrrryyyy!!
Have to go book our bus!

Cambodia

ALLO!
we are in Sihanoukville right now (south cambodia, on the Gulf of Thailand). We came here from Phnom Penh yesterday. Unfortunately the weather is still a bit crummy, its been pretty cloudy most of the time we have been in Cambodia (almost a week now) but still hot and still nice.
I guess from the last post we were in Southern Laos...we visited a couple of the islands there which were nice. The first was remote (i think i wrote about it) and very authentic...the second was called Don Det and was definitely a tiny little tourist hub. we only stayed there for one night though because it turned out that there was no ATM or banks anywhere on the islands because of their remoteness, so we had to use our cash to get to Siem Reap while we still had some.
Siem Reap was sweet, we stayed a couple nights there and visited Angkor Wat for sunset (hardly a sunset cause it was cloudy) but then the next morning we woke up at 5am (mad and i slept through our alarm, which we always do, but luckily our friends found us and woke us up). we made it just in time for sunrise, which was pretty amazing, even though we were absolutely exhausted. We hired a tuktuk for the day to drive us to all the different temples at Angkor Wat (they are all very spread out and in different areas). They were unreal though, it would take about 30-45 minutes to go through each one. We would upload some pictures of it but unforutnately our cameras are out of commission (ill elaborate on that in a second). Cambodia gives a very different vibe than Laos considering how close they are to eachtoher, i think the poverty level is around the same, but the people here are much different, and the begging is much more intensee than what we found in laos. Laos was much more laid back. Oh and the prostitution here is pretty wild, soooo many very old men walking around with very young cambodian girls, its really sickening. You see it everywhere, its hard to get over....Anwayys, After visiting Angkor Wat and puttering around Siem Reap for a couple days we left for Phnom Penh.
Phnom Penh even gave a different vibe than Siem Reap...probably to do with all of its history, but again there is a ton of begging and it is a very bustling city. we were forwarned about being cautious with bags and scams etc as it is very common there. In PP we met up with Mad's dad's friend's fiance (haha long explanation there)...but she is Cambodian and she invited us for dinner at her house one night. She picked us up on her motorbike and then drove us to her house which was about 30 minutes from our guesthouse. Her whole familywas there for dinner (3 sisters, 3 kids, her borther, and her inlaws), where we ate a Khmer meal on the floor of their wooden house built on stilts over the river. WE really enjoyed it, she was so sweet and her family was so welcoming, and it was awesome to have a very Cambodian experience. we visited Tuol Sleng Museum (which is S-21 prison) where they kept and tortured thousands of people during PolPots Regime (Khmer Rouge). It was incredibly creepy and heartbreaking. THe next day on our way to the Killing Fields (where they killed all the people that were kept in Tuol Sleng), we were riding in a tuktuk and a guy on a motorbike drove up beside us and literally snatched Mad's purse off of her body. It was a shoulder bag and wrapped around her body and under her shoulder, and somehow this guy managed to get it over her head within a second and then drive off on his bike. We tried to follow him but the tuk tuks go sooo slow and there is always sooo much traffic. SOooo unfortunately Mad lost her camera (all her memory cards), her ipod touch (which is what we have been using for skype), and some cash. Luckily our passports were int he process of getting the vietnam Visas back at the guesthouse but its still a huge bummer considering that my camera half- broke when we were in laos so I havent been using it that much.
Now we are in Sihanoukville which is nice, lots of tourists (cause the beaches bring everyone here) but the weather isnt that great which kind of sucks. Today was decent weather. The people tyring to sell you stuf here is a bit aggressive on the beaches...its all young girls and boys (around 15 years old or so) trying to sell fruit/bracelets/sunglasses etc). One girl got really hostile with Mad today cause she claimed that Mad made a promise with her to buy some fruit from her even though she didnt...but the girl wasnt happy, she was cursing at us and stuff.
okkkiiiii time to go! will try and get some photos up soon if we can find some relatively decent ones on my broken camera (the lens broke so i cant see what i am taking pictures of and i cant use any of the settings so the pics dont turn out that well). Porbably gonna both be buying new ones whenw e get to Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam within a week.

LaoLao

Sorry for the delay! Laos has been the worst with internet, everywhere we go is either so slow and not worth the money. So the update from since Luang Prabang...wow we are pretty far from there now. From Luang Prabang we bussed down to VangVieng with our canadian buds where we met Amber and Hannah. Randomly we ended up getting a room directly beside theirs (we knew what hotel they were though). VangVieng was hilarious basically all u do there is go tubing and then lounge at these "Friends Bars" where all the restaurants play episodes of either Freinds or Family Guy literally all day long. Its a trap for all the hungover people who go tubing the day before. The day after we arrived we went tubing, there was 6 of us (all canadians) so we bought red and white heart shaped sunglasses and then each person bought 'sanpans'(those asian rice hats). we made quite the impression. Tubing basically involves renting a tube and then geting a tuktuk to the top of the river where u start at the first bar (the river is lined with bars) and then you tube to the next. It was incredibly fun! Amber and Hannah left the day after the tubing and we stayed, we planned on doing one more day of tubing before heading to Vientiane but we woke up to the weather being really crappy and pouring rain so we decided to leave vangvieng. In Vientiane we only stayed one night, the 4 of us went to a french restaurant for dinner which was sooooo good and we had amazing steaks (we went all out and got wine and salads etc and our total bill was still only 50$ between 4. it was awesome. Vientiane wasnt that exciting though, the weather was still crappy (probably about 15 degrees and pouring rain). After our dinner we went bowling and without knowing it we ran into amber and hannah again! Bowled with them for a while then parted ways. They left for Hanoi the next day. From Vientiane we decided to reroute and instead of heading to Vietnam we decided to see Southern laos and what they call the 4000 islands. its a long route so we broke it up and stopped at a cave called Kong Lo and it is 7.5 km long, it was wild. we took little boats through it. We stayed one night at a guesthouse, saw the cave, then left that night for Pakse(after a 12 hr bus ride that was supposed to be 6 hrs). UGH and it was freeeeeezing while we did this. This cold front hit that area of laos i guess and we literally had to wear pants and layers and layers of tops because it was probably 5 degrees (not joking) and sooooo windy. During the night maddy and I shared one of our single beds and put 2 comforters on it. Lasted about 2 days. anyways, We arrived in Pakse after at 4am and had to find a guesthouse, which was annoying but not too bad, just super tired. The next day we took a bus to Don Khong (the biggest of the 4000 islands) which is where we are now. Its really nice and were really glad we came this route because now we arent far from Cambodia, and its super relaxing so we are just gonna chill here for a few days before crossing the border. THe islands are super quiet and its funny cause they are called the 4000 islands but we think that they count these 5 foot chunks of land emerging from the water, in that 4000, so its not like all these massive islands everywhere....just a lot of little guys! today we rented bikes and we just biked around trying to find beaches but they dont really have them on this island, its the most "authentic lao" of them all. We have hardly seen any tourists. TOmorrow we are going to DonDet which is one of the smaller islands and apparently a bit more touristy (supposed to have a beach or 2), but well see...we thought this one had beaches but it definitely doesnt!
we are having an amazing time though, Laos has been sooo awesome, hence our extending our stay here a bit and traveling more of it. were excited to hit cambodia too though!
hope all is well back home!!

scared mid-zip,and our view from the Treehouse

Luang Prabang

We arrived in Luang Prabang yesterday. We took a slow boat from Huay Xai which stopped over night in this weird little town called Pek Bang....greeted on the boat by hundreds of kids stealing our pringles , pops, and pillows out of our hands ahha while all the older people (still probably only 16-25) tried to recruit everyone to their hostels. Very strange little place but it was nice cause we knew alot of people on the boat that we had left Huay Xai with! After 2 days on the boat, we got to Luang Prabang and it is the cutest little city ever! It doesnt feel like asia at all (minus the Laotian people), it gives this sort of euro vibe, and the streets are sooo quaint and so pretty and the architecture is very victorian and beautiful. The city is right between 2 rivers as well so its incredibly scenic. We went to this cool bar last night called Utopia where we played the lifesize Jenga (each block has a dare on it though), it got pretty funny. the bar also had a volleyball court in it and andtons of other sweet games. Today we rented bikes (ppink and purple ones with cute little baskets haha) and biked around the city. we visited a couple temples, a market sort of out of town where there are no tourists, went to the Kings Palace, and just sorta explored. we love it, its incredible! TOnight we are going to this temple at the top of a hill to watch the sunset (its supposed to be really beautiful), then to this bar called Hive where there is some weird ethnic dancing and fashion shows or something haha. We also bought tickets to a ballet tomorrow night!
okidoki, time to go. we are trying to upload a few pictures from the Gibbon expereince but the computers here are absolute shit so even to upload a few takes about 40 minutes. We are working on it and hopefully can get some up shortly!

Gibbon Experience

Just got back from the Gibbon Experience in Northern Laos. It was INCREDIBLE!!! The trip started with a 3 hr ride in the back of pickup towards the national park. Pretty bumpy and uncomfortable ride but still fun. From the first village we hiked for a couple hrs before hitting a waterfall where we got to swim and hang out for a bit before continuing our walk. From there we walked to our first ziplines which ultimately led into our first treehouse. It was awesome!! you literally zip IN and OUT of the treehouse onto these landings. The first night our treehouse was 30m above ground (i think) and then the second night the treehouse was 40m high. They were sooooooooooo cool! THe first night was the most dramatic haha since everyone isnt used to the whole "jungle" atmosphere. The night came and within minutes we spotted several HUGE spiders just hanging out above each of our beds. Later on as we were playing cards we were then greeted by a rat that was trying to get into our garbage...the rat caused some serious uproar haha. The second night wasnt as dramatic, still bugs and weird creatures and spiders but we were more adapted by that point. The days were always really calm, all we did was hike and zip line around...the ziplines going overtop huge valleys and up to i think 600m long! they were sooooo cool and so fun! The second day everyone was wiped from walking so mucha nd sleeping so badly (cause of all the weird sounds and animals running around your head in the night) so we all napped midday and it was the BEST nap ever. SOooo quiet, just the sounds of birds and crickets, with this nice little breeeze. it was great! Our group was awesome too, (thank god), it was 8 people - 2 canadian guys (from kelwona), 2 brits, and 2 frenchies, and then us. All around our age too whcih worked well especially during the nights because everyone was so afraid! all in all, we LOVED it and it waas 100% worth the cost! OH, we didnt see any gibbons though unforuntaly! we saw some monkeys, snakes, and then all the weird night creatures that emerged haha.
we are heading to Luang Prabang tomorrow by slowboat. It takes 2 days (stopps one night in a little town) then continues on the next day. All the people we did the Gibbon experience with are doing it as well so were all going together!
okidoki. Nomies out.

Chiang Mai

We are finally in CHiang Mai! took us about 2 days to finally get here (its pretty high north and we were way down south). The journey started with a 2 hr boat ride from Koh Phangan to SUrat Thani (mainland) where we caugh a bus to go to BKK...that was 12 hrs...after that bus we arrived at BKK at 5am and had to wait till 830am to leave by train for CHiang Mai. After that it was another 12 hrs. We got to Chiang Mai at 930pm and found a hostel. This morning we switched to a hsotel we liked better and is cheaper, its called Malak Guest House. We really really like Chiang Mai, it is a lot quieter than BKK and has more of a thai feeling than the islands (which are incerdibly touristy), its also quite a bit cheaper. TOday we rented bicycles and biked around the little markets, alleyways, and visited several temples. At one of the temples, there was something called a Monk Chat which we had read about. the point is to go and sit with monks and ask them questions (and they ask you) to help better their english. It was funny causeour designated monks' name was "Chat". He was 22 and he was very good at speaking english. We wer wanting to upload a bunch of pictures from our hostel (casue the computers are free) but turns out they are incredibly slow and they have blocked the usb access so that people cant download antyhging onto the computers. Oh well! we will try somewhere else maybe later. tomorrow we aer going on a day trip to do anelephant trek, bamboo rafting, visiting a few tribal villages (long neck villages they aer called, where people put large rings over their necks so that overtime their neck becomes quite elongated). Should be cool! we are going to try and leave for Laos on the4th or 5th, and then hopefully do the Gibbon Experience in Bokeo Province(we are just waiting to hear back from them). anyways, thats all folks!

Angthom National Marine Park

This place was incredible. Took an hour by boat to get there and the boat tours around to several of the islands where it would stop and we could walk to look out points/snorkel/swim/kayak. It was amazing! At the last island we stopped at we decided to take the "walk" up to the lookout...it was ridiculous. 500 meters up, and it was a solid hike/more like rockclimbing in flip flops haha. Literally had to climb the most jagged rocks at the very top, but once we made it to the point it was amazing...overlooked many of the islands and beautiful beaches. Going down was just as bad as coming up, if not worse. We basically clung onto the ropes (similar to the ones they have at the Grouse Grind) the whole way. It was probably 10x worse than the last quarter of the grouse grind (but mostly just at the top of it...the bottom portion wasnt THAT bad). Anyways, just a short update, but we are going to a Half Moon Party tonight (its in the jungle as opposed to the beach), so that should be interesting. we are going with some french people we met last night. We will probably be here for a couple more days before we head to Chang Mai.

Ladyboy Cabaret

We forgot to add that last night we went to this Ladyboy cabaret show which was hilarious and insanely wild. You would neverr EVER believe that these girls are actually "guys". we were boggled. they did performances as Tina TUrner, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, Beyonce...haha they always try and recruit guys from the crowd too (the one bar where girls dont have to worry about being pestered) and one of the guys we were with got pulled up and then they dressed him up and made him dance around on stage. After that bar we moved on to AC Bar which our friend scootered us to, at this place they had all the classic fluorescent paint etc that you see in pictures. It was VERY fun!

More floating market/arrival in koh tao

BKK/Floating Market/lunch with amber and hanna

Koh Phangan

well my friends, we've hit the jackpot.
and that jackpot is Haad Yao on Koh Phangan. this place is unreal... we are splurging a bit and staying at a gorgeous little resort in a bungalow on the beach, its about 800 baht for the both of us, so around 12$ each. insanely cheap but expensive for here. the beach is amazing, powdery sand, turquoise water, great little bars/restaurants. i think we may be stuck here for a few days. this island is a lot different than the one we did our diving on (koh tao).. less westernized and much bigger. lots of farming areas and mountains and jungles. we are in the north end of the island which is MUCH nicer than the south end (around where the full moon parties are). we were going to stay at a place down there but realized we needed to go somewhere else, and thank god we did because there is no comparison.
anyways, we finished our diving course yesterday and are fully certified!! wooooooot! left koh tao this morning on the boat to where we are now. the boat ride was awesome, just napped on the front of the boat in the sun. we are pretty excited to just relax for a couple days and not wake up at 6am to go diving. i think tomorrow we are going to go on a tour of the Angthong National Marine Park which looks gorgeous. the boat leaves at 8am and we snorkel, kayak, and cruise around through all the little islands in the park. super excited!
thats it for now.

View from hotel, confined scuba lesson, fire dancers along beach

HEY! still in koh tao... started our scuba diving lessons yesterday in the pool - practiced how to breathe underwater, do some emergency skills etc. then today hit the boat and went on two dives in the ocean which was so awesome! saw some cool fish, and went down to 12 meters which seemed pretty far down for us, but tomorrow we will do 18 m. it was hard for our ears to adjust at first to the pressure change but i think they will get used to it. (plus i have a cold right now which makes it worse! - maddy speaking fyi) other than diving training we've been puttering around the island, eating, drinking on the beach... they have this amazing soup here we've been eating for lunch everyday, its kind of like Pho with the rice noodles, then you load it up with your own spices, sooo good! the atmosphere on the island is great, everything is so chill and relaxed. each resort and restaurant has all these blankets/bean bags/or other sitting devices set up right down on the beach so you can eat/drink down there then these fire dancers come and perform every night which is pretty cool to watch. anyways, we will be fully PADI certified divers tomorrow which means we can do some diving in Vietnam and Bali later on! i think we are leaving on the 24th for Koh Phangan to the half moon party which is a big party in the jungle. then after that we'll try and get a cheap flight up to Chiang Mai (N. Thailand)! thats the news so far...
sincerely,
your beloved nomads

koh tao

our last day in bkk we went to the floating market which was veryyyyyyyyy cool but pretty touristy. all the little vendors line up along each side of the river and as ur paddle boat floats down they each pull u in with hear weird little hooks that attach onto ur boat. once u pass hrough the vendors though the place is amazing, all these little houses are built over the river and along it. after he paddle boat we had a chance to walk around the market a bit before going on a motor boat. we saw this guy holding this massiveboa snake at the beginning and we knew we wanted to be a part of that. so we bargained wig grid guy to let us hold his creature. it was pretty cool and not nearly as gross as you'd expect. we took tons of pics but will upload later. after the market we went back to the city and met amber and Hannah for lunch on khoasan road but hen we has to jet cause we had a bus to take at 6. the bus was pretty funny, supposed to leave at 6 but left at after 7 andwas an overnight type thing but at 3amthedriver woke us unto get off and get on some other thing that took us to chumphon ( a connector town to the islands). we were pretty tired, after that bus (which was only 30 min) we had to wait at the dock till 7 whenour boat left for koh tao. so we are now on koh Tao which is amaaaaaaazinggggg. we are staying at this place called coral grand resort and it is on sairee beach which runs up along most of the western side of the sIsland, but he acual island is very small. we re taking scuba lessons starting today then we get 4 open water dives. after it will give us our certification for diving up to 18 meters. most of the plats here give u accommodation when u book a dive course so we will be in this place for probably 5 or 6 Nights even though our course is only 3 days ( we cut a deal to give us free accompdation for a couple days following the course). we went to a bar called the lotus last night ( thanks b!) and it was very fun. there were these insane fire shows going on for a few hours, it was wild. anyways we are about to head to our scuba session, we will upload pictures later on! xoxo

Amazing pad thai on Khao San Rd, and Patpong market

Mae Nam Chao Phraya/Dinner with James

More grand palace

Beijing Airport...8 hr layover

The Grand Palace/Wat Phra Keaw (?)

What is the difference between Hollywood and Holywood?

We spent some time yesterday going to the Grand Palace, walking around, and then we hit Khosan Road w\hich is where all the toursits go and stay, its quite cute and bumping with activity. Last night we went for dinner with our new friend, James, who is from Singapore and runs a anti-aging/skin care consulting firm. we kept running into him in the elevator and we spent sometime tlaking. He is here for some group Christian stuff and traveling alone so i think he wanted some friends. we agreed to go for dinner, after we established that he wasnt a pervert or anything wild haha. the dinner was a nice little japanese place (not sushi style), and he bought it for us. After a lotof talk about our lives and his life and what not he gave us some homework for today...he wanted us to tell him the difference between what our idea of hollywood and HOLYwood is. We told him we would come back to him with some answers...so were still working on it. After our dinner maddy and I went to Patpong market which was so funny...theyve cracked down a bit on its 'wildness' cause it is pretty perverted and aggressive haha. Everyone there tries to recruit you to come to the sex/lady shows...."P**** cuts banana", "p****shoots out ping pong", "free show no charge"...pretty outrageous stuff. and they pester u so much so whenever they tried to get us to go in we would try and take pictures of their sheets which they show you listing all the different type of "shows"...then they would bugger off cause they dont like u taking pictures. We are obSESSED with the street padthai and this green curry...it is amazinggggggggg. Today we tried to go to some palace but turns out alot of things are closed cause its Buddha Day or something. so we are back on Khosan road, puttering around. we just bought our bus ticket to go down to Koh Tao where we are gonna go scuba diving etc, it leaves at 6pm and goes overnight to Chumphuon where we will take a boat to Koh Tao. Tomorrow we are also going to the floating market which is a couple hrs out of BKK but it looks pretty cool. anyways all in all BKK is awesome, the weather is outrageously hot and super fun, its not as smoggy as we thoughgt it would be, and we cant wait to go down south to the islands!!
probably report back in a couple days. xoxoxox

Bangkok

HELLLLLLOOOO,

Today was our first full day in Bangkok and it was GREAT. It was so good to arrive in BKK and not haev to go scrounging around for a place to stay. Our hotel is in this area called Siam Square which is very cool, lots of little clothing markets and shopping places. So we puttered around a bit last night when we got in then by that point got too tired and went to bed. We went to the Grand Palace today (Wat Prah Kewh i think its called) which was this amazzzzzzzzzing conglomeration of temples and stuff related to the King (who everyone insanely praises here)...apparently he loosk a lot like Mad's uncle...haha. I tried to upload a lot of pics but the computers here are really confusing and everything was in thai and now there is only 2 minutes left. F. frantic. ok. OH were going for dinner in 15 minutes with this Malaysian friedn we made in the hotel...i think hes 60. and hes a devout Christian. started giving maddy and I a lesson about demons and stuff haha we felt bad cause we burst out laughing but didnt mean to it was jus ttoo funny. 1 minute. ugh.
we will write more tomorrow.
